Why Homestead?

First of all, what is Homesteading?  It’s a lifestyle focused on sufficiency, sustainability, and independence, characterized by growing, preserving and producing one’s own food, energy and goods.  It’s an emphasis on gardening, raising animals, repairing or repurposing items, and is usually found in rural settings.

What that typically looks like is a family working together to get things done.  Trying to do it yourself, with what you have versus what you can buy.  Connecting with the land in a way that creates synergy: a cooperation of you, the animals you tend and keep, the food you grow, and the community around you.  Because anyone living in the country knows that having good neighbors is a definite necessity.  You need each other.  You can always use a helping hand.

When Ed thinks about Homesteading, these words come to mind:  harmony, nature, independence.  You may have similar goals.  The best part is that Homesteading can be scaled to whatever level you can start with. The best way to start is to start.  Don’t wait until you think you’re ready to embark on a complete lifestyle change.  Begin incorporating some of those elements now: container gardening in your own back yard; buying a half-bushel of peach seconds from the farmers market and canning those for a delicious treat in the winter; getting a couple of hens for a backyard flock.  Those simple starts give you the confidence to build on.  And hey, come to Leto’s Meadows and see it in action!  We’re happy to share.
